Participants will examine the physiologic changes associated with aging, common chronic medical conditions, polypharmacy, and the impact these factors have on oral health, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making. The course explores the oral healthcare needs of patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Parkinson disease, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, stroke, and other physical, cognitive, and medically complex conditions. Emphasis is placed on recognizing barriers to care, improving communication with patients and caregivers, and implementing appropriate clinical modifications that promote safety, accessibility, comfort, and quality of care. Participants will review evidence-based strategies for comprehensive medical risk assessment, oral disease prevention, infection prevention and control, behavioral guidance techniques, treatment modifications, interprofessional collaboration, and caregiver education. Ethical and legal considerations, informed consent, patient autonomy, documentation, and accessibility are also discussed to support patient-centered care and compliance with current professional standards.
